Alexandre Fournet – Jazz News

Talkin’ About John

Franck Bergerot – Jazz Magazine

Prometteur ! »

« – Enticing meeting –

QUAD is a brand new quartet formed around the Hungarian pianist Emil Spanyi, who has collaborated with Daniel Humair or Archie Shepp. Joining him are Florent Souchet on guitar, Anders Ulrich on double bass – already seen alongside Raphaël Gualazzi – and Simon Bernier on drums. The nine tracks of the album were composed by the whole group, each bringing his own universe to this first opus. As a result, there may be a lack of atmosphere in the album. But this is the only complaint that can be made. Taken separately, all the compositions work perfectly, and « Wooden Magic » is a little gem of harmonies served by two high-flying solos, piano and drums. »

Alexandre Fournet, Jazz News

« Founders of Parallel Records. Florent Souchet (elg) and Anders Ulrich (b) produce here the work of an exciting « little workshop » in the company of two regulars of the label, Simon Bernier (dm) and Emil Spanyi (p), the best known of the four for his Crazily intelligent technique in the service of François Jeanneau and Christophe Monniot for ages. From the riff to the drawers, they arrange scenarios and distributions of their improvisation parts with a constantly renewed liveliness avoiding the often fatal pitfall of piano-guitar addition. »

François Marinot – Jazz Magazine

« With this music rooted in postmodern jazz and never neglecting melody, we enter a collective universe because all the quartet’s musicians participated in the compositions of the album. With rhythmic often very marked by the break, the album gives the listening a homogeneous sum of soundscapes where each one carries with finesse the melodic ideas and the figures of style imagined for the music by the quartet. Emil Spanyi twirls on the keyboard with the appetite and virtuosity that we know him and his colleagues are not left behind. »

Talkin’ About John

« They surprised me, especially Souchet both by his fluid guitar and without primer that by his pen which, avoiding the beaten tracks, makes dance this rhythm section and sound good in its way this saxophone console »

Franck Bergerot – Jazz Magazine

« This quintet is composed of young musicians and seems to want to join a jazz worthy of the name. the compositions are all of Florent Souchet and are not devoid of qualities. They allow improvisation and dialogue between the composer’s guitar and the saxophonists. There is no trumpet but we can feel the influence of Miles Davis from the second half of the 60s. Florent Souchet – who, moreover, has knowledge on several instruments – brilliantly masters the guitar. This one, without crushing the partners, is judiciously highlighted throughout the ten pieces. We appreciate it in « Jeanne », the solos in « What About », « Etatique », « Dunes » … and finally on all themes!   The partners of the guitarist are well worth it. Pierre Bernier is not thirty, and his tenor and soprano performances are superb. Of particular note are « What About », « Boucin’ With John », « Chief Dalton » (solo: Ilfat Sadykov), virtuoso soprano in « Etatique ». The drummer, who avoids any superfluous demonstration, and the bassist perfectly support the quintet. The groove of the bass is perfect in « Bouncin’ With John ». Good jazz. Promising! »
